Hey there, busy bees! 🌟
Welcome back to our self-care challenge series, where we find creative ways to sprinkle a bit of joy and relaxation into our hectic lives. This week, we’re diving into a fun, time-tested activity: game night with friends or family!
So, “What’s so special about game night?” Well, let me tell you, it’s not just about rolling dice or drawing cards. It’s about connection, laughter, and yes, even some surprising mental health benefits.
What's on the blog:
WHAT THE SMART PEOPLE SAY
Stress Buster: Playing games is a fantastic way to unwind. A study found that socialising with friends and family can lower cortisol levels, which is a marker of stress. Game nights create a light-hearted environment where laughter and camaraderie naturally lower stress.
Brain Booster: Games often require strategic thinking, memory recall, and problem-solving. Engaging in these activities keeps your brain sharp. Research shows that mental stimulation from activities like board games can improve cognitive function and even delay the onset of dementia in older adults.
Mood Lifter: Playing games increases the production of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals. This can improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Relationship Strengthener: Game nights offer a platform for quality time and bonding. Whether you’re teaming up in a cooperative game or playfully competing, these moments foster a sense of belonging and emotional support. Family game nights can enhance communication and strengthen family bonds.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR HOSTING THE PERFECT GAME NIGHT
Ready to host your own game night? Here are some tips and ideas to ensure everyone has a blast:
1. Choose the Right Games
For Families with Kids: Opt for classics like Monopoly Deal, Candy Land, The Logo Game, Heads Up or UNO. These games are easy to learn and fun for all ages.
For Adults: Try strategic games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, if that's your thing, or cooperative games like Cranium. For a good laugh, try games like Watcha Mouth or Kid History are fantastic.
For a Mix: Games like Apples to Apples or Codenames are great because they’re easy to understand and entertaining for a wide age range.
2. Set the Scene
Comfortable Seating: Ensure there’s enough seating for everyone. Bean bags, cushions and cozy chairs can make a big difference.
Lighting: Soft, ambient lighting sets a relaxed mood. If it’s too bright, it can feel like a classroom. If it’s too dim, people might struggle to see the game. Aim for a happy medium.
Snacks and Drinks: Keep it simple but plentiful. Finger foods like popcorn, veggie sticks, chips and dips are always a hit. Have a variety of drinks available, including water. I know that sounds boring, but go with it 😜 You can make it fancy by adding sliced cucumbers and mint.
3. Create a No-Tech Zone
Encourage everyone to put their phones away. This helps keep the focus on the game and each other. Consider a “phone basket” at the door where everyone can drop their devices.
Perhaps even include some kind of penalty if anyone touches their phone during a game to up the ante.
4. Keep It Light
Remember, the goal is to have fun. Don’t take the games too seriously. Laugh at the mistakes, celebrate the wins, and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company.
You can even give out awards such as:
'The Try Hard' - perhaps the most competitive, but never actually won anything
'Jack of All Trades' - the annoying person who seems good at every game
I'm Still Warming Up' - the biggest loser
'The Lawyer' - always making sure the rules are followed
'Analysis Paralysis' - loves to take their time before making a move
GAME NIGHT IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED
Classic Game Night:
Break out the old favourites like Scrabble, Clue, and Risk. These games have stood the test of time for a reason. Some of my favourites are 5 Second Rule, Cranium, The Logo Game and Watcha Mouth just to name a few!
Themed Game Night:
Choose a theme (e.g., 80s night) and pick games, music, and snacks that match. It adds an extra layer of fun and creativity.
Mystery Game Night:
Host a murder mystery game where everyone gets a character to play. Games like “Murder Mystery Party” are perfect for this.
Trivia Night:
Test everyone’s knowledge with a trivia game. You can buy a trivia board game or make your own questions based on your group’s interests.
LET'S PLAY!
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the simple joys of gathering around a table and playing a game with loved ones. This week, let’s hit pause on our busy lives, unplug from our screens, and reconnect with the people who matter most. Whether it’s a raucous game of charades or a strategic battle in Settlers of Catan, game night is a surefire way to boost your mood, sharpen your mind, and strengthen your relationships.
So, what are you waiting for? Roll the dice, draw a card, and let the good times roll!
Happy gaming! 🎲
