Smell is everything to making a home feel fresh, clean and welcoming. I only really ever want to burn candles when the weather is colder and at nighttime for the ambiance. So, instead of burning candles in the warmer months, my go-to for making my house still smell fresh and clean is a good linen spray.
You can make your own linen spray with only three ingredients! It is incredibly cheap and healthy for the whole family, including your pets (depending on the essential oils you choose). Here's to a fresh, clean smelling home!
1. KEY INGREDIENT INFORMATION AND EQUIPMENT
Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
This ingredient is key to stopping your linen spray wetting everything. The alcohol dries the mixture really quickly after being spray on furniture and linen. And, with a good combination of essentials oils or fragrance, you won't even know that there is any alcohol in this.
You can buy this from any home goods store, such as Bunnings.
Distilled Water
You don't necessarily need to use distilled water in this product, unless you have hard water like I do then I would recommend it. Sometimes using tap water can leave a residue due to the minerals in it. Distilled water always improves the shelf life of any product it is used in instead of tap water. I know this recipe already includes alcohol which means this has a good shelf life anyway, but it doesn't hurt to try and extend it further :)
Essential oils / fragrance
This is where you get to have fun and experiment. The higher the quality essential oil or fragrance oil you use, the less you have to use, the longer the scent lasts for, and the nicer the smell you will get. (Where to buy). See below recipe for fragrance ideas. Remember to ensure that you are using essential oils that are safe for your furry friends if you have any at home (click here for information).
Glass spritzer bottle
When using essential oils, it is important that you use a glass bottle/jar. Essential oils are high concentrated plant extracts and have the potential to leech plastic when stored in plastic bottles (where to buy).
2. RECIPE
Equipment
• Glass spritzer/spray bottle.
• Funnel to make pouring into your bottle easier.
Ingredients (this is a ratio depending on the size of your glass spritzer/spray bottle)
1/3 isopropyl alcohol
2/3 distilled water (or tap water if you don't have hard water)
Approximately 40 drops of essential oil/s
2. FRAGRANCE IDEAS
Note: If using essential oils, not all are pet friendly. Essential oils are very powerful and concentrated, and our pets are more sensitive to smells than we are. Also, their livers are not able to metabolise some of the compounds in essential oils. If you are ever uncertain of what is safe for your animal, contact your veterinarian. Click here for a list of safe oils for pets.
